The major function of the shaft sleeve is to protect the shaft from packing wear around the stuffing box. Shaft sleeves are normally used in single-stage pumps. In these pumps, the sealing gland and the impeller are not directly attached to the shaft. The sleeve is attached in between the impeller's bore.
